1st Grade Busy Bee Classroom News 2.11.19

WEEK OF February 11th

Teasley Vision Statement:

The Purpose of Teasley Elementary School is to educate the whole child in a safe and caring environment.

Fancy Nancy Word of the Week

  • Convert: to change into a different form, divert from original/intended use

Important Transportation Information

• Any kids staying after school for clubs must have a written transportation change for that day. Please send a note each day that they are staying for art club or ASP enrichment. This cuts down on confusion if there is ever a substitute teacher in the class.

• No changes of transportation can be accepted by parents over Remind, Class Dojo, email, etc. Changes must be made in writing to the office and received by 1:30 each day.

Thank you!

For those of you who wish to have additional resources to use at home, here is a wonderful website. It is mainly advertised as a teacher sight, but you can see there is a wide variety of reading resources. If you have the time to dig through it, you can find wonderful tips and tricks to help your children at home too. :0) She advertises many items that can be purchased, but there are plenty of free items on her pages that can be used at no cost - other than your paper and ink.
There are SO many resources that it can be overwhelming so, this http://www.carlscorner.us.com/WOW.htm is a direct link to an activity that we do in class as well to practice sight words. Scroll to the bottom for free resources.

Valentine's Day

Students are asked to bring in a Valentine for each child in the class. They will deliver them the morning of February 14th. These Valentines can be purchased ones or very special hand made valentines. Please have your child address the valentine as well as sign it. Sharing the Planet

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Sometimes this can be challenging in Smyrna, but make the effort to establish these habits in your home. By developing children who care about the environment, you are helping the future of the globe. Can you find new things in your home you can recycle instead of throwing it in the trash?

Helpful Hints for IB units

As we all become more knowledgeable in the use of plants and human impact on our world, ask your child “Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of History?”
You might be surprised with their answers!

IB Character Traits and Central Message

After reading a book, spend some time considering how the people in the book acted. Was someone in the book caring? All of the time or just some of the time? Were all of the characters in the book caring or just some of them?
Some books to consider:
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss
The Grouchy Ladybug byEric Carle

Biblionasium

Please remember to read at home! This will help your child in their reading skills, writing, as well as, math. You can log your minutes in the Biblionasium webpage. Bonus: If you log your minutes, you can earn special prizes from Mrs. Crosby (our Media Center/Library specialist)!!

IB Unit: Sharing The Planet

Central Idea: Living organisms around the world require different necessities in order to survive

Key Concepts:
* Function
* Connection
* Causation

Vocabulary:
Environment
Impact
Conservation
Change

Learner Profile Traits:
Caring
Thinkers
Inquirers

Lines of Inquiry
-Plants and animals have basic needs in order to stay healthy
-Plants have parts with specific jobs
-Humans have impacts on the well-beings of plants and animals

Teacher goals for students’ learning:
-Students will be able to identify the needs of plants and animals
- Students will be able to identify human’s impact on the world around them
- Students will be able to identify the parts of a plant

How can you help at home?
-Can you grow a garden at home? Discuss with your child what your garden might need (water, sunlight, etc.)
- Ask your child if all plants grow the same way- do trees need the same thing as air plants? Do flowers need the same things as grass?
-Talk with your child about how humans can impact how plants grow- if we cut trees down, what will happen?
-Have you heard about endangered animals? What is it that humans are doing to impact those animals?

Encourage them at home to be caring by:
- Discussing how to reduce, reuse, and recycle with your child.
-Discussing how we can be role models for our friends and neighbors or in the community.

*Kids have big ears, big eyes, and big hearts- let’s set that example for them to make the
world a better place!

Encourage them at home to be thinkers by:
-Encouraging your child to think of a problem that they see in the world and discuss how they would fix/help the problem
- Encouraging your child to think of a variety of ways to solve everyday problems- i.e. “I’m not sure how to arrange the cups so that they all fit in the cupboard”. -If your child is working on a problem, ask them “How could I solve this differently?’ or “How did you figure that out?”

Encourage them at home to be inquiring by:
-Encouraging your child to think of a variety of things they might be interested in learning and going to the local library to learn more about that topic
-Demonstrate aloud that you might not know the answer to everything- show how you find the answer to your question.
